Container Gardening Idea

One of the best container gardening ideas we can think of is to create a salad container garden. Salad gardens can be created in small, medium or larged sized containers, and depending on the amount of space you have and what you like in your salad... you can grow tons of wonderful vegetables and herbs in just one container!

If you're using smaller pots to create your salad container garden, then you'll want just two or three plants per pot. If you decide to use a larger pot though, you may have room for six or seven different salad garden plants. Either way, make sure you don't crowd them too much when planting your salad container garden, so they'll have room to grow and produce lots of fresh salad fixings for you throughout the year.

The first thing you'll want to choose for your salad container garden is tomatoes. There are many types of tomatoes that will grow in containers, but you'll need to prepare for the type you choose. Small cherry tomatoes which grow in bush form are the easiest to put in a container garden, but larger ones that need support can be grown too. All you have to do is add a miniature trellis or some other type of support for the tomatoes as they grow. Some tomato plants will actually trail over the edge of a hanging container garden too.

Next choose some lettuce. And this is where the salad container gardening ideas can get quite fun. Head lettuce like iceburg will take up some space, but there are plenty of leafy lettuce varieties which work really well in a container garden, plus some of them provide gorgeous colors in your container garden. Try some buttercrunch, salad bowl, romaine or ruby for variety. Spinach also makes for great leafy lettuce in salads, as does parsley too.

When growing lettuce, you can go get some any time you'd like. Most leafy varieties can be cut time and time again, and they just keep growing back for you.

Carrots can be grown in your salad container garden too, if you choose the miniature baby carrot styles instead of regular full sized carrots. There are also some carrots which grow as small balls. They're quite cute, take up very little space, and are wonderful additions to a salad container garden.

Radishes are another excellent idea for salad container gardening, because these too take up little space and don't require deep containers in order to grow to full maturity.

If you like fresh green beans - whether for a salad or to go with dinner - these can often be easily added to a salad container garden as well. There are some varieties which grow in bush form, which helps them take up little space while still producing lots of beans for you throughout the season.

Green onions are also excellent additions to container salad gardens, as they also don't take much space at all.

Some people like to grow squash and cucumbers in salad container gardens too, but be aware these will take up some space as they grow and mature. They'll work quite well in larger, patio container gardens, or in window box container gardens too.
